Looking back to 2017...

In 2017, Realize focused its efforts on:

  • Building relationships with individuals with disabilities, their families and the local community to better understand their needs and aspirations.

In December Realize launched its Information and Support Service providing fun, informative sessions for individuals with disabilities to socialise with others, learn new skills, increase their confidence and have fun! For families there was the opportunity to meet with other families, share experiences, gain per support and access information.

  • Raising the profile of disability – creating a platform for raising awareness promoting the inclusion of individuals with disabilities.

Realize organised Belize’s first ever Santa Run, Walk, Roll. The event was attended by individuals with disabilities and their families, organisations working in Cayo and members of the local community – all with the purpose of giving visibility to individuals with disabilities.

Realize also welcomed its first volunteers, all the way from the UK. We are grateful for all the time and support offered by volunteers without whom much of our work would not be possible.

We are also delighted to have become Office Gurus Charity of the Year and look forward to working with them over the next year.

The year ahead…

In 2018 Realize plans to continue to build strong relationships with individuals with disabilities, their families and local organisations by supporting them to drive the inclusion agenda forward.
Information and Support Service

The Community drop-ins will continue throughout the year. Last year families told us what they really appreciated from attending the drop-ins was the opportunity for their children to socialise and to be able to talk to other families. We want to work with families this year to look at how we can establish parent support groups, so they can meet where and when it suits.

  • Realize More- In the first half of the year Realize will launch an online platform- “Realize More” providing:

  • Key information on disabilities for individuals with disabilities, their families, teachers and health professionals.

  • A parent/carer forum where families can share experiences, give support and access disability information.

  • Access Belize- Providing information on accessible places to eat, drink, play, visit throughout Belize

Action for Inclusion projects

  • Healthcare 4 All!

Working alongside individuals with disabilities and their families, and health professionals we want to help ensure hospitals and health centres can meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.

Realize will be consulting with:

  • Individuals and their families to understand what works well and what improvements they would like to see in healthcare centres and hospitals to enable them to be more inclusive of individuals with disabilities.

  • Healthcare professionals to understand what training they have received in disability inclusion, what works well in their workplace and look at where Realize can support them to become more inclusive of individuals with disabilities.

As a result of the consultations, Realize will develop disability inclusion training sessions and resources for health professionals which will be delivered across Belize.

  • Education 4 All!

Working alongside individuals with disabilities and their families, and teachers we want to support schools to be inclusive of children with disabilities.

Realize will be consulting with:

  • Individuals and their families to understand what works well and what improvements they would like to see in school to enable them to be more inclusive of children with disabilities.

  • In service and trainee teachers to understand what training they have received in disability inclusion, what works well in their school and look at where Realize can support them to become more inclusive of individuals with disabilities.

As a result of the consultations, Realize will develop disability inclusion workshops, a teaching handbook and resources for teachers which will be delivered across Belize, and an online Disability Inclusion course which will be open to all teachers in Belize.
