Engaging children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Some suggestions on how to communciate and engage children on the autistic spectrum
Always use a child’s name at the beginning so that they know you are talking to them.
Make sure the child is paying attention before you ask a question or give an instruction. Be aware that the signs that someone is paying attention will be different for different people. Use your observations from your initial meeting, discussions with the parents/ carers and initial assessments to gauge what this means for the child.
Focus on the child’s special interest or the activity they are currently doing to engage them.
